Seeds of Kindness

The Sunday School students will continue to raise money to support  Heifer Project, Int.  We are working on our 5th Ark!  That is over $20,000 in the past 15 years.  They have homemade grape jelly and raspberry jam for sale now and will be at the Auction with their lemonade stand outside the Clothing Barn on Saturdays.  Also, we have beautiful gift cards from the Heifer Project if you want to honor a family member or friend with a donation to the Heifer Project.  Please call and leave us a message at 766-3535 if you would like to buy jam, jelly, or a gift card.  Thank you for your support of the children with this project.

The last few weeks of Sunday School, we have been talking with the children about how we as Christians want to “plant seeds of kindness”.  This is a rather abstract concept for young children, so we planted marigold seeds to help make it more concrete.  They were excited when the first hints of green greeted them one Sunday morning.

I felt a similar excitement when I heard about a seed of kindness which was planted about eight years ago by the North Chatham United Methodist Church. The NCUMC participated in the Capital District Refugee Resettlement Project and sponsored the Ibralic Family from Bosnia.  We supported the Ibralics by helping them set up their new home, taking them to medical appointments, and helping them to learn about life in the U.S.  Senada Ibralic works at Albany Medical Center.  Barbara Zittell reported that Senada took our friend (and former minister) Bob from the recovery room to his room after his recent surgery.  Senada recognized Bob’s face and together they figured out that North Chatham was their connection.  I am confident that Bob got the “Cadillac treatment” while he was in Senada’s care: our seed of kindness made things a little more pleasant for him that day.

The latest seeds of kindness that we are planting are in East Africa through the Heifer Project’s East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD).  The Heifer Project is an international relief organization that has the goal of ending world hunger.  NCUMC’s Sunday School students partnered with the North Chatham Free Library and the 4-H Buccaneers to raise $5,000 to donate to the Heifer Project.  Through matching money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, our $5,000 became $10,000!  According to the Heifer Project’s website, “EADD will help one million people – 179,000 families – lift themselves out of poverty by developing 30 milk collection hubs with “chilling plants” where farmers will bring raw milk for pickup by commercial dairies”.
